Hardware Warranty and Repair Policies

Limited Hardware Warranty

National Instruments warrants its hardware products against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date it is shipped to the customer. In the event a reseller purchases a product from NI, integrates it with a system, and sells it to a user, the warranty period still begins on the original ship date from NI. This limited warranty is void if failure of the product has resulted from accident, abuse, misapplication, modification, improper calibration by the customer, use of an improper hardware or software key, or unauthorized maintenance or repair. Hazards such as lightning, flood, exceeding voltage specifications, or customer abuse are not covered under warranty.

Extended Warranty for Hardware Products

At an additional cost, extended warranties are available at the time of purchase for most NI hardware products. These extended warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship for one (1) or more additional years, as specified in the terms of the extended warranty. The process for product return and applicable customer remedies are the same for extended warranties as those that apply to the original term warranties. With respect to products covered by extended warranties, if the original purchased product is no longer manufactured, NI will, at its option, offer a replacement product of substantial equivalency. For additional information, consult the ni.com/services/warranty.

Warranty Transferability

A hardware warranty may be transferred from one customer to another provided that appropriate documentation is produced. For hardware purchased for shared use, this documentation should be on the letterhead of the original purchasing entity or e-mailed from the entity’s domain. For shared or private use, the letter must be from an individual with sufficient explicit or apparent authority to make said transfer. Full contact information such as name, physical address, e-mail address, phone number, and fax number are required.

Return Material Authorization

The customer must obtain a return material authorization (RMA) number from NI before returning any products to NI for repair. An RMA number must be issued whether the repair is covered by warranty or not. Obtain RMA numbers by contacting National Instruments online or by phone at (866) ASK-MYNI ((800) 275-6964).

Warranty Repair

The customer may return a hardware product that is covered by warranty for repair after obtaining an RMA number. Any product covered by warranty is repaired or replaced, free of charge. All repairs carry a 90-day warranty, which begins the day the repaired item is shipped back to the customer. If the product warranty expires sooner than 90 days, the repair remains under warranty for the full 90 days.

Nonwarranty Repair

The customer may return a hardware product for repair that is not covered by warranty. A standard repair fee, specific to the product, is charged for any product that is repaired outside of the warranty period. Repairs performed on products out of warranty also carry a 90-day warranty, which begins the day the repaired item is shipped back to the customer.

Nonrepairable Hardware

National Instruments contacts the customer for hardware covered under warranty that cannot be repaired and offers an equivalent replacement product, if available.

For hardware that is not covered under warranty, National Instrument offers customers the following options:

  1. The customer may upgrade to a newer, functionally equivalent product at normal list price.
  2. National Instruments can return the product to the customer. A $100 USD testing fee is charged.
  3. The customer can request that National Instruments appropriately dispose of the product for them at no charge.

Nondefective Hardware

The custormer is notified if, after examining and testing a returned product, National Instruments concludes that the product is not defective. The product is returned at the customer’s expense and the customer is charged a $100 USD examination and testing fee or the standard repair fee, whichever is less.
